Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
